Negele Arsi General Hospital and Medical College successfully conducted the 2nd annual research conference on the 28th of August 2022 under the theme “Research to address contemporary issues in Health and education.” Over 30 abstracts were submitted to the college, and 11 abstracts were selected for oral and poster presentation and presented. Two keynote addresses were undertaken by two experienced researchers based on the two sub-themes. Over 100 participants from different institutions, including government and private HEI's, Regional health bereau's , Zonal and woreda representatives, attended the conference.

The conference was conducted on 6th September 2020 at Negele Arsi Town, with the theme: ‘Research to Sustain Development and Quality Education. Researchers, distinguished guests, academicians, staff, and students have participated in the conference. The conference welcoming speech and program introduction was made by Mr.Ashebir Nigussie, Director, the Office of Research and Community Service, Negele Arsi General Hospital and Medical College (NAGHMC). Following the welcoming speech, Dr.Belayneh Leta, Chief Executive Director of NAGHMC, made an opening speech and invited the guest speaker to present the keynote speech. The conference Keynote speech was made by Professor Bekele Megersa from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, Addis Ababa University, and his presentation focused on “Research to Sustain Development and Quality Education.” Seven research papers (four oral and three poster presentations) were presented at the conference covering different health and health-related issues. Following each research paper presentations, the discussion was made to address questions, comments, and suggestions raised by conference participants. Finally, recognition and awards were given for individuals and institutions who had a great contribution to the 1st annual research conference, followed by a closing remark made by Mr. Kasim Hussein, Academic vice Dean of NAGHMC.

Overview: Research contributes to the development of a nation and the world through generating evidence-based information. Conducting research and community service is one of the pillars of HEIs. NAGHMC has been conducting R&CS activities since its establishment. Over 5 research studies conducted by NAGHMC staff were published, and free cataract surgery was given for over 2000 patients; hip replacement was done for over 80 patients as part of community service activities. Objective of RCS Office: To systematize and coordinate faculty research activity through the preparation and submission of research proposal to the R&CS Committee and Administration for funding and other relevant funding agencies. Research Thematic Areas: In line with the National Research Agenda, research at NAGHMC is organized under 5 main themes with 31 sub-themes: 1. Communicable and non-communicable diseases 2. Population, Environment and Health 3. Nutrition and Health 4. Health Systems and Policy 5. Medical and Health Science Education and Innovation.
